Google Chrome Gets AI Upgrade with Gemini Assistant for Smarter Browsing

Google is giving its Chrome browser a major artificial intelligence upgrade aimed at making web browsing smarter, safer, and more productive. The update introduces Google’s Gemini AI assistant, which can help users answer questions, understand content across multiple tabs, and find references in YouTube videos.

Soon, Gemini AI will also allow users to quickly resurface previously visited pages. Initially, these features are rolling out to Mac and Windows users in the U.S. with English as the default language, with plans to expand to Android and iOS. Google will also integrate Gemini AI into other services such as Docs and Calendar to simplify research, workflows, and daily tasks.

The Chrome omnibox, or address bar, is receiving an AI Mode update, letting users ask complex, multi-part questions, receive context-aware suggestions, and follow up on queries. For instance, while shopping online, the omnibox can suggest follow-up searches like “what’s the warranty policy?” based on the page being viewed. Contextual suggestions are live in the U.S., with AI Mode rolling out later this month.

Security is another focus. Google is using AI to protect users from scams and online threats. Chrome will securely autofill credentials, block new scams, fix compromised passwords, filter spammy notifications, and simplify privacy permissions. Google reports that AI-powered protections have already cut scammy notifications on Android by around 3 billion per day.

Additionally, Google is developing advanced “agentic” capabilities in Gemini, which will allow Chrome to handle multi-step tasks—such as ordering groceries—while keeping users in control. These updates mark a shift from traditional browsing to a more proactive, context-aware experience for Chrome users.
